It’s harder to block a vertical punch. It is harder for an opponent's side block to move a punching arm off line when it is vertical because the pectoral muscles are more fully engaged. What made Isshin Ryu unique was the combination of a vertical fist with the thumb on top. The thumb on top of the wrist allows the tendon on top to lock in. Also not having the thumb floating along the side of the fist means that it is not susceptible to squeezed into a joint lock.
